TYPES OF SENIOR CARE FACILITIES

Long-term care. These facilities provide rooms and clinical assistance with daily activities for residents. The facilities help those who need ongoing and consistent care.
 
Nursing homes. The homes offer high-level medical care 24 hours a day, including care for complex medical issues and help with day-to-day activities and medication assistance.
 
Retirement homes. These are usually restricted to people 55 years of age or older. Residents typically need little or no assistance but want to live near other seniors.
 
Continuing care retirement communities (CCRC). Care is offered depending on an individual’s need, from independent seniors to those who need a high level of care.
 
Independent living communities. Residents live on their own, but have access to assistance when needed as well as a range of on-premises activities.
 
Assisted living communities. Help is provided for basic activities, such as cooking and bathing. Residents often have their own bedroom and bathroom, but share common areas.
 
Skilled nursing facilities. Residents have access to 24-hour nursing care and rehabilitation services. They’re designed for seniors who need ongoing medical care.
 
Memory care facilities. The facilities are specifically designed for seniors with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive impairments. Staff members are trained to care for these residents.
 
In-home care. For people who prefer to age in place at home, this option has healthcare providers come to seniors’ houses to administer care.

TYPES OF CARE WITHIN FACILITIES

Custodial care. Assistance with daily living, from helping seniors shop for groceries, to assistance with daily tasks, such as getting dressed and cooking.
 
Skilled nursing care. A trained or licensed healthcare professional performs clinical tasks, such as helping administer medication, providing IV therapy or delivering wound care.
